This workshop presented by Marsha Dunn Klein, MEd, OTR/L challenges the participant to look from the medical procedural aspects of tube feeding to the family, mealtime and interaction aspects of tube feeding.
The purpose of this workshop is to look at the big picture for tube feeding. It will challenge the participant to look from the medical procedural aspects of tube feeding to the family, mealtime and interaction aspects of tube feeding. Tube feeding will be presented from the perspective of the child, as well as the family, for healthy feeding relationships. Information will be given via lectures, shared discussions, slides, videotapes and small group activities.

  • Explain the history of tube feeding
  • List principles of a successful mealtime.
  • List pros and cons of different types of tubes
  • Understand relationship of stages of infant bonding and attachment with oral and tube feeding.
  • Define the infant and parent roles in feeding from infancy through three years of age.
  • List ways tube feeding can influence oral feeding.
  • Discuss anatomical/physiological factors influencing feeding.
  • List gastrointestinal symptoms that influence feeding.
  • Describe relationship between GE reflux, feeding & appetite.
  • Review common GI diagnostic procedures.
  • Define support for families in making tube feeding a "mealtime" instead of a "procedure".
  • Discuss dietary diversity and homemade blended diets.
  • Define considerations in assessment of tube fed children.
  • List readiness factors in transitioning from tube feeding towards oral feeding.
  • Define eating as a learned behavior
  • Discuss the use of language and word choice in parent support
  • Describe the importance of hunger/appetite in transition to oral feeding.
  • Discuss oral cautiousness vs oral aversion.
  • Define the "get permission" approach to mealtimes and oral motor treatment and give examples.
  • Understand exploratory and calorie reduction appetite challenges.
  • Understand the sensory channels in the sensory continuum and treatment strategies for each.
  • Create goals and specific treatment activities for tube fed children and their families.
  • Discuss options for tube feeding parent support.
